Standard Language Courses

Bienvenue aux débutants! Welcome, beginners! This class is designed for students with no prior experience in French. Careful attention is paid to proper pronunciation, best learning techniques, and in-class participation to learn how to speak with confidence. We will cover most of the first three units of Édito A1: introducing oneself, talking about likes and dislikes, and learning basic exchanges. Greetings, initial numbers, and the alphabet are also covered, in addition to core grammar concepts such as basic verb conjugations and the gender of nouns. Have fun in French online with your classmates learning the language in authentic contexts and using songs, videos and easy storytelling!

This class covers the material of Édito’s Unit 4 while also providing more practice with the basics students have learned to date. New structures include the imperative for giving commands and the near future tense. Topics included are travel in Paris and French-speaking countries, public transport, and asking for and giving directions. Grammar topics include giving commands and using time expressions and important connecting words to form slightly longer sentences. Learn the essentials for getting around on your next trip to Canada or France with confidence!

On avance! This class moves students beyond the basics and onto Unit 3 of the Édito book series. You’ll discover new verb forms and important connecting words and, as always, our emphasis on speaking. Students will also use and review some prior learning (la base) in addition to taking on the new theme of “What’s there to eat?” Anchor your learning in real-world scenarios that are practical and motivating! Meet back up with your classmates from the Spring Session and continue having fun learning the key words and phrases that make survival communication possible in French!

Students will learn time expressions and personal descriptions and be able to speak about daily activities and various types of outings. Grammar targets include useful irregular and reflexive verbs and the recent past. Some time will also be devoted to correct pronunciation and discussing differences regarding the use of free time in our respective cultures. Continue learning with your peers in authentic contexts using our engaging method!

This class will cover Unit 9 in the Édito A1 book, “Bonnes vacances!” Students will learn how to describe the places they visit and express their vacation preferences. Essential grammar points include comparisons, the gender of place names, impersonal expressions in the imperfect tense, and the passé composé of the verb être. Nature and vacation vocabulary is included as well as exploring some French-speaking places to visit on holiday. Enjoy practicing with your peers while picking up new terms and expressions using Édito’s engaging method!

Based on the Bien-Dire Initial, the varied topics serve as a launching point for engaging discussions. The friendly and open format is designed to encourage students to read and react to the various articles that cover social news, francophone personalities, the arts, travel, and language! Engaging audio, additional vocabulary, and occasional grammar study help to guide students’ learning. Teacher-provided copies of Bien-Dire Initial are included, so the use of a tablet or second monitor is strongly encouraged.

Standard Language Courses

This class will cover Unit 5 of the Édito B1 program. Students will acquire the vocabulary they need to talk about the pros and cons of living in a big city. Grammar topics will include the passive voice, liaison, and the proper placement of adjectives and the nouns derived from these. Cultural subjects will cover major Paris monuments, gentrification in Montreal, and some easy poetry. Édito’s engaging written and audio documents show students how French is used in everyday, useful, and authentic contexts. Emphasis is also placed on conversing in class and in paired activities. Learn what the new tendencies are in city planning and how to make the most out of la vie en ville!

Come read and discuss this short novel filled with mystery, philosophy, and reflections on morality, judgment, and human nature. The class will emphasize conversation, practical vocabulary, and cultural understanding in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Come strengthen your French while exploring an important work of modern French literature. Students are encouraged, but not required, to read this short work before we start. You must procure your own copy of La chute 

(Folio mass paperback edition recommended). Order yours online early in case it ships from abroad!

Based on the Bien-Dire culture magazine for intermediate and advanced French students, the varied topics serve as a launching point for engaging discussion. Less emphasis is placed on structures and more on acquiring cultural understanding and nuanced vocabulary. The open discussion format is designed to encourage student reactions to the various articles covering social news, francophone personalities, the arts, travel, and language! We listen to some articles in class and engage in related exercises to retain new terms and some useful grammar. Teacher-provided copies of Bien-Dire included, so the use of a tablet or second screen is strongly encouraged.
