Bienvenue aux débutants! Welcome, beginners! This class is designed for students with no prior experience in French. Careful attention is paid to proper pronunciation, best learning techniques, and in-class participation to learn how to speak with confidence. We will cover the first three units of Édito A1: introducing oneself, talking about likes and dislikes, and learning basic exchanges. Greetings, initial numbers, and the alphabet are also covered, in addition to core grammar concepts such as basic verb conjugations and the gender of nouns. Have fun online in French with your classmates learning the language in authentic contexts and using our practical and effective method!

The themes “Happy Vacation!” and “At Work,” will show students how to describe the places they visit, express their vacation preferences, and talk about life in the work world—skills, training, and one’s areas of expertise. Essential grammar points include comparisons, the gender of place names, impersonal expressions in the imperfect tense, the passé composé of the verb être, and essential pronouns. Nature and vacation vocabulary is included as well as lexicons for discussing professions. Enjoy practicing with your peers while discovering cultural insights and refining your pronunciation!

Beginner French Club - Le Cercle Francais - A1 Review

Conversation Courses

This class is designed for A1-level “graduates” who feel they need more practice conversing with the vocabulary and structures of our standard beginner curriculum. Using a communicative approach, students must listen carefully and follow the scripted lead of the instructor to “hear” their way through basic questions and dialogues. In this manner, grammar and essential terms are learned intuitively rather than relying on translation. Let Christelle walk you through the essential A1 learning points: first tenses, vocabulary to meet basic needs, and proper pronunciation. Increase your confidence in speaking and listening! Grammar topics will include the passive voice, liaison, and the proper placement of adjectives and the nouns derived from these. Cultural subjects will cover major Paris monuments, gentrification in Montreal, and some easy poetry. Édito’s engaging written and audio documents show students how French is used in everyday, useful, and authentic contexts. Emphasis is also placed on conversing in class and in paired activities. Advanced Conversation

Conversation Courses

Designed for high-intermediate and advanced students (B2–C1 levels), this interactive class provides an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and spoken skills through a variety of sources. In addition to our casual and personal conversation, the course this fall will include discussion of the stories found in Vola, Vola et autres histoires, a collection of short works that won the 2024 Prix du jeune écrivain. The tales cover multiple subjects and cultures, including a tale of two sisters with divergent lives reuniting to mourn their grandmother, an elderly man reliving his childhood through modern technology, and vengeance dealt out for a youth filled with neglect.
