Beginner French Club - Le Cercle français (A1 review class)

Conversation Courses

This class is designed for A1-level students who don’t feel they have had enough practice with the vocabulary and structures of our standard beginner curriculum. Using a communicative approach, students must listen carefully and then follow the scripted lead of the instructor to “hear” their way through basic questions and dialogues. In this manner, grammar and essential terms are learned intuitively rather than relying on translation. Let Christelle walk you through the essential A1 learning points to help increase your confidence in speaking and listening: first tenses, vocabulary to meet basic needs  and proper pronunciation.  Teacher: Christelle L. Utende

Teacher will provide materials, but students may wish to refer to their Edito A1 textbooks.

Structures include indefinite expressions of quantity, the subjunctive to express will and desire, the passive voice, deriving nouns from known adjectives, and a review of negation. This class puts an emphasis on speaking, so students are encouraged to express their points of view and engage in one-on-one conversations with different partners. Ni vues, ni connues (Neither seen, nor heard)

Specialty Courses
Have you ever heard of Christine de Pizan or Alice Guy? How about Rosa Bonheur, Louise de Baissac, Catherine Dior? These are just a few of the influential French women, who, while perhaps “unseen and unknown” even today, all made significant contributions in areas as diverse as science and the arts, law, adventure, feminism and espionage. To help celebrate Women’s History Month, let Nikki show you the vision, daring and intelligence of these and many other incredible women. Could Marie Marvingt, the first woman to fly over the English Channel, also have ridden in the Tour de France? Mais oui! Students will read about (level A2-B1), discuss and optionally present portraits of these remarkable individuals! Find out who was the “influencer” in Thomas Jefferson’s day, who brought storytelling to cinema, who was given a permis de transvestissement (allowing her to wear trousers), and who helped keep D-Day a secret from Hitler. Teacher: Nikki Matheson
Puisque, “pour être connues il faut être vues,” we will read from the textbook Ni vues, ni connues, available through Amazon, Thrift Books, or through your local bookstore.
11 weeks, Wednesdays 5:30-->7pm, from March 25 to June 3 - Online only
Pace: 1 x 1.5hr class per week over 11 weeks

A vous la parole! Advanced self-directed conversations

Conversation Courses

In this Spring Session, we will continue our casual and personal, yet focused conversations with more student direction. Participants (supported by the prof) will choose topics based on their interests and curiosity, which will become those focused conversations. These may be generated from a short story, photographs, a news article or report, a recipe, a play, a video, and so on. These topics will be determined before class, so students have the time to prepare their ideas. In addition, we will be challenging ourselves with weekly grammatical mini-reviews to be applied in very controlled discussion to accomplish our ULTIMATE GOAL: to increase one’s comfort level with these advanced structures and the language. No book required. Instructor: Marcus Grace

11 weeks—Online only, 5:30-7pm, Mondays from March 23 to June 1

Pace: 1 x 1.5hr class per week over 11 weeks

B2 Club Magazine

Specialty Courses

Club Magazine returns in 2026, with all-new content for the Spring Session! Based on the Bien-Dire culture magazine for intermediate and advanced French students, the varied topics serve as a launching point for engaging discussions. While more emphasis is placed on acquiring cultural understanding and nuanced vocabulary, students can also choose to explore tricky grammar structures. The open discussion format is designed to encourage student input and reactions to the various readings that cover social news, francophone personalities, the arts, travel, and language! We listen to some articles in class and engage in related exercises to retain new expressions. Virtual copies of Bien-Dire are provided, so the use of a tablet or second screen is strongly encouraged. Teacher: Marc Juneau.
