Intermediate Level (B1, B2 Level)

“Adaptation” – Learning French through Popular Music

Popular songs provide a fun and engaging way to study and learn French! So what happens when these songs are adapted into other languages? Let’s look at how word choices are based on nuance, cultural codes, references, and even the cadence of a language. The background stories are also interesting, such as how “Comme d’Habitude” turned into “My Way” and then eventually to Bowie’s “Life on Mars.” Let our resident Alliance musicienne Nikki Matheson lead you through a host of adaptations and musical trends, including the Yé-Yé ’60s, folk, and Broadway. Discover which hits’ themes and melodies crossed the ocean. Because there is so much to talk about, class discussions will be entirely in French. It is therefore recommended that students speak comfortably at the B1 level.
