CANCELLATION POLICY:  Under-subscribed classes will be cancelled at the discretion of the AFLCR;  this is the only case in which refunds can be made. Usually 5 is the minimum enrollment to run a class.

Beginner Level (A1, A2 Level)

Special Beginner Class: Fun with French, in French!

This interactive class will get you engaged in listening, speaking and reading French for the entire duration of the class… With no note taking, beginners (and returning French learners) will be guided to practice the language. So whether you have no understanding of grammar or you have been a grammar nerd in the past, this class will place emphasis on comprehensible input and ensure that your French acquisition is growing.

We’ll use stories as the medium for this interactive learning experience. Whether the story be oral or written, students will be invited to contribute to the overall plot by adding details and twists which will keep the engagement high as the language is effortlessly acquired.

A1 102 Conversational

This six-week class will cover the material in Latitude’s Units 3 & 4 with a focus on putting into practice orally what was learned. With the additional practice exercises provided, students will be able to drill during class to better master asking basic questions and to use the present, past and future tenses learned to date. Important cultural distinctions, a review of basic pronunciation and vocabulary building will also be featutred. Level A1 101 recommended.

A1 103 Conversational

Come join us and practice your speaking skills while reviewing the grammar and conjugation points you discovered in your A1 103 level.

Through role-play, dialogues and other communicative situations, you will practice talking about situations and events in the past, ask and respond to a variety of questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer, and discover ways to respond to invitations. The weather, time and date concepts will be practiced in the context of making appointments.

A1 105 Conversational

This class is designed to increase students’ mastery of expressions and structures needed to talk about different types of places, reflexive actions and expressing intensity and quantity. Real world sources and listening activities place participants in authentic situations to help enhance learning and motivation.

A2 103 Concentré

This class covers the material in Units 3 & 4 of Latitudes 2 with a short review of this book’s introductory chapters. New material includes other forms of negation, essential verbs of displacement, comparisons and agreement in the passé composé. Review includes the passé composé and imperfect tenses compared, the subjunctive mood and question forms. Emphasis is placed on practical usage in everyday contexts with additional practice provided for independent study. The class is conducted almost exclusively in French.

Le racisme expliqué à ma fille

This class will focus on Tahar Ben Jelloun’s ground-breaking work, “Racism explained to my daughter”. This short text is accessible to advanced beginner students, but participants may want to be a bit comfortable speaking to discuss this sensitive topic in class. Several outside sources (provided) will also allow us to examine anti-Semitism in France (from the Dreyfus Affair on), and recent reactions in France.

Book Club

Come read and discuss the adventures of Alex Leroc, a French investigator working in Brussels who only lives for his job. In our story “l’Ange Gardien”, Alex Leroc travels to Perpignan to discover the identity of a masked vigilante who prevents, without violence, criminals from committing their crimes. Students will be encouraged to read out loud, debate and discuss the themes and actions characters take, becoming more comfortable with all facets of communicating in French.

In addition to the text, the book also contains comprehension activities and an audio CD of the story being read.

This class is designed primarily for discussion and has three main areas of focus: review and mastery of essential structures and pronunciation, “le bon mot” – providing a range of useful vocabulary and essential idioms, and expressing opinions and experiences. Students are encouraged to discuss in small group settings and write short reactions to share on a variety of everyday topics provided through readings and videos.

Magazine Club – Mercredi Culturel

Explore France and francophone culture through reading magazine articles, as we provide you articles that guide you to discover new aspects of francophone culture — on topics such as tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema and arts. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language through idiomatic expressions and specific key words and expressions, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented in the article.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements!

Creative Writing

Let’s play and create with words! Join Alysse to improve your writing skills in French while letting loose your imagination on the page. This course is perfect for those looking to apply their knowledge of French in a more creative and playful way. While continuing to learn and build both vocabulary and grammar, students will also be practicing their oral expression through reading their creations to the group. This course will not only help students improve their written French but their overall understanding of the language’s expression.

We will engage in short writing games, read poetry for inspiration, and evoke ideas and word associations to bring the language to life.

More Fun with Grammar

This course uses the Amsco French Three Years (1st or 2nd edition) review text/workbook to revisit and systematically practice the essential structures people must master to be good speakers. This class will focus on the future and conditional, reflexive verbs, the passive voice, negation and the special uses of certain irregular verbs. Each chapter gives extensive explanations and models followed by numerous engaging exercises to help students internalize the grammar. Some are completed independently, and the remaining are gone over conversationally in class. Emphasis is placed on practical usage and unavoidable exceptions.

Students must purchase their own book and many gently used copies can be found for sale online. Answer key provided.

Conversation

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
