CANCELLATION POLICY:  Under-subscribed classes will be cancelled at the discretion of the AFLCR;  this is the only case in which refunds can be made. Usually 5 is the minimum enrollment to run a class.

CLASS STATUS:  It will be noted on this page if classes have filled or been withdrawn or if their status is in question, requiring contact with Madame Tremblay before registering.

Beginner Level (A1, A2 Level)

French 101 – Through Stories

Are you ready to jump-start your French? This is an introduction to the foundations of French where you will get you engaged in listening, speaking and reading French for most of the duration of the class – With no note taking, beginners (and returning French learners) will be guided to experience and practice the language.

So whether you had no understanding of grammar or you were a grammar nerd in the past, this class will place emphasize on comprehensible input and ensure that your French acquisition is growing.

We’ll use stories as the medium for this interactive learning experience. Whether the story be oral or written, students will be invited to contribute to the overall plot by adding details and twists that will keep the engagement high as the language is effortlessly acquired as the story is developed.

NOTE: we will cover all the important grammar points, verbs and vocabulary you’ll need to sign up for a A1 102 class this coming fall!

Short Stories in French

Let’s read Charles Perrault’s tales together! This class uses an innovative learning approach for students who have a stong basic French foundation. We will work on comprehension and communication skills through reading and discussing a simple short story. Vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will unfold in a natural intuitive immersion process while also leaving space for exploring specific language challenges. Students will be encouraged to discuss, debate and write about the short story, becoming more comfortable with all the facets of communicating in French.

A1 104 Conversational

Following the structure of Units 7 & 8 in the Latitudes 1 textbook, this class uses additional resources and guided practice to revisit essential structures such as commands, the past tense, negation, relative and indirect object pronouns. Emphasis is placed on the spoken context, so more practice offering advice and for giving and understanding directions is provided. Basic vocabulary for everyday use and the discussion of the cultural topics of green architecture and overseas French-speaking regions is also featured.

Book Club

This book club has been so successful during our winter and spring sessions that we decided to offer a part 3. Same book, different explorations and discoveries about the City of Love! PS: this book is not a chronological one, so you don’t need to have read the previous chapters to be part of our book club.  Join us 🙂

With the book “Je t’aime, Paris” and other visual media, you will travel to the City of Love. This course will introduce you to the world of art, fashion, architecture, cinema, gastronomy, nature, sports, and more in France’s beloved capital.

In addition to learning more about Paris, you also will expand your vocabulary, enhance your grammar and develop your listening and pronunciation skills, as we read and listen about Paris’s most famous landmarks and hidden attractions. Students will be encouraged to read out loud, discuss, write and/or present about a place in Paris, becoming more comfortable with all facets of communicating in French. Activities at the end check comprehension.

An enclosed audio CD provides a recording of a native speaker reading the book.

Magazine Club – Jeudi Culturel – Session Canceled

Explore France and francophone culture through reading magazine articles, as we provide you articles that guide you to discover new aspects of francophone culture — on topics such as tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema and arts. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented in the article.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements! This French conversation class is completely in French.

Conversation Club (Burlington) – Session Full!

You have been studying French for about two years already, so at this point you have a solid foundation in the grammar and conjugation — and you wish you could put your language skills into more practical action, expressing your ideas and opinions. This French Conversation Club is an excellent way to take a leap with your conversation skills!

This interactive and student-centered class offers a conversation practice through role-plays, debates and “cocktail party” style, as well as discussions about movies and articles you’ll have to watch/read between classes.

Most discussions will cover familiar topics, and will be introduced in a supportive and friendly learning environment. No textbook required.

Carnets de Voyage – Session Canceled

Using the short extracts provided in Littérature Progressive de la Francophonie, this survey course provides intermediate students with snippets of literature from around the French-speaking world. Readings are grouped by themes such as youth, travel, exile and the unknown, and students are encouraged to briefly research the authors presented or the specific work or period from which excerpts are drawn. Additional resources are provided for a more in-depth look into this vast domain or into particular writers/poets and time periods. Students revisit the passages assigned by reading aloud in class and discussing the authors’ styles and intentions.

Explorations Culturelles

Based on Ross Steele’s Civilisation Progressive du Français – Intermédiaire, this course offers students an overview not only of what makes France’s culture so unique, but also surveys the cultures of a number of important francophone regions and countries. Short readings followed by engaging exercises and class discussion will portray a depth of cultural practices, products and perspectives. Vocabulary study will be based on the readings chosen, and students help determine which grammar to focus on. The suggested edition must be procured well in advance by students and covers every dimension of French society, from history and contemporary thought, to geography, politics and economics.

Littérature: Sept histoires qui reviennent de loin

Jean-Christophe Rufin is a doctor, historian, novelist, former French diplomat, and a member of the Académie Française. Rufin has travelled extensively. In “Sept histoires qui reviennent de loin” he takes us on seven journeys to different places, often exotic, where we will share a moment in the lives of the characters. Each story has its own plot, intrigue, and outcome. All the stories are an invitation to travel and meet different cultures. Book purchase required.

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
