Beginner Level (A1, A2 Level)

A1 101

Are you ready to jump-start your French? If you are a true French beginner or someone who wants to resume your studies of French after a long period, this class is for you.  This is an introduction to the foundations of French where you will learn basic useful words and expressions used in daily situations.

Middle School Extra Help

A student-centered approach for beginning French, this weekly tutorial session helps young students master the basics of learning vocabulary, verb forms and the asking of basic questions. Topics include home & school, telling time, favorite sports and activities and structures include the present, past and future tenses. Students’ own personal questions are also addressed.

A1 102

This class expands on the French you learned in A1 101 by learning how to converse with others about your interests such as hobbies or sports. In order to be able to share your plans for the future, or experiences in the past, we will move out of the present and explore new verbs and verb tenses. Through multi-media, class discussions, and the textbook, you will gain more confidence in your ability to make friends, travel, and appreciate francophone culture.

This class will continue what you started in A1 102, such as how to use verb tenses, and improving your ability to interact with French speakers. You will practice expanding your answers to questions and how to build on what you hear in a real conversation. Learn how to respond to invitations, make appointments, reservations, and plans, as well as express your opinions. In addition to the textbook, videos and music will be presented. You will be pleasantly surprised by how much more you will understand when you are watching a TV series or movie in class or at home!

Book Club for High Beginners

The Spear of Destiny has a fascinating history! Join us to find the whereabouts of the supernatural Spear of Destiny through an imaginative story leading us through a variety of historical information and cultural sites around France.

This class uses an innovative learning approach for students who have a strong basic French foundation. We will work on comprehension and communication skills through reading and discussing a simple short story. Vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will unfold in a natural intuitive immersion process while also leaving space for exploring specific language challenges, becoming more comfortable with all the facets of communicating in French.

Complementing the reading and discussion about the story, this interactive class will bring historical and cultural events to life, students will also be encouraged to research and bring quick trivia facts to each class to add an authentic cultural note to the lighthearted unfolding story.

This class will get you ready to ask for and follow directions, as well as locate hot spots when traveling in Francophone regions. This class will also guide you on advising others.

High School Extra Help

A student-centered approach for beginning French, this tutorial session helps young people master self-expression in French. Focusing on spoken French primarily, student are also encouraged to review and practice the vocabulary and structures needed to talk about their daily lives, tell stories in the past tenses, and talk about possibilities for the future. Topics include city and country life, the arts and professions, and a variety of French cultural topics from Paris, fashion and food to French-speaking countries and regions. Students’ own personal questions are also addressed.

Time to explore the language beyond the basics! We will dive into the nuances of retelling a past memory, while also talking about events and projects you are planning in the future. This class will also explore ways to express one’s opinion targeting a sense of obligation using the subjunctive.

Intermediate Level (B1, B2 Level)

Vite et Bien

Continue mastering the essentials of Intermediate French with this rapid method designed specifically for adults “on the go.” Every two weeks or so, students engage in a new unit which presents not only authentic dialogues and texts, but useful exercises for practicing target vocabulary and essential structures. Topics in 101 include misadventures, daily routines, news in brief and conversational debate.

Media Club – Mercredi Culturel

Explore francophone culture through a variety of media (magazine articles, short documentaries, podcasts, short movies, radio reports with transcripts) that will guide you in discovering new cultural perspectives on topics such as tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema, arts and spirituality. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements! This French conversation class is completely in French.

Sur les traces de Champlain

Most people have heard of the French explorer for whom our cherished Lake is named, but few know the full story of Samuel de Champlain in our region. 24 different authors collaborated in 2017, to create this unique novel, half-fictional, half-historical which, takes you “to the heart of the colonization of New France…(for) a different look at a pivotal moment in the common history of whites and Indigenous Peoples.” Students read independently and discuss the authors’ style and ideas by reviewing key passages in class.

Conversation

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
