The first class will present a brief snapshot of the history of French cinema and some vocabulary associated to the 7th Art. Selected clips and quick background information about the movie and its place in the broader social and historical background will be presented in class before viewing the movie at home. The remaining classes will be devoted to sharing opinions about the movies selected for this course, and talking about the main themes, the film techniques used and character development. What is the symbol of the rose in the tale of Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête)? Let’s read this story together in French! This 8-week class uses an innovative learning approach for beginner French students who have a strong basic French foundation. We will work on comprehension, pronunciation and oral communication skills through reading and discussing an abbreviated (and adapted in length and in its language) version of Beauty and the Beast (by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont).

Vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will unfold in a natural intuitive immersion process while also leaving space for exploring specific language challenges.  Students will be encouraged to read out loud, play parts in the dialog, discuss and write about the short story, becoming more comfortable with all facets of communicating in French.

Book Discussion: Mohammad, ma mère et moi

The French writer and cinéaste, Benoit Cohen’s “récit”, ostensibly based on true events, begins at the moment when Donald Trump comes to power. Cohen is an immigrant living in Brooklyn, NY; his mother, Marie-France, is a 70 year-old rich widow residing alone in Paris. Concerned that she, without having breathed a word to him, is about to have a single, young, poor, Afghan refugee and stranger move into her home, Benoit flies back to Paris to meet Mohammad and check on her. The three come to form an improbable trio: the traumatized young man eventually trusts her as his “guiding star”, and it is to Benoit, a voluntary exile, that Mohammad, an involuntary one, finally opens up and confides his gripping experiences in four countries. In this singular, moving story, the three individuals describe, not without humor, the complex, challenging path that is laid out when one directly encounters another culture – as well as what happens when one learns what “giving”, and “accepting”, really mean.
