L’école des femmes

This 6-week course explores what many consider to be Molière’s greatest play, The School for Wives. In it, the male protagonist Arnolphe does everything in his power to secure an ideal marriage with his ward, the younger Agnès. In so doing, we discover his complete misunderstanding of women in general and his inability to trump true love despite his scheming. As interesting a read for its place in history as a “feminist” play as it is for the beauty of Molière’s language, L’école des femmes is a must for any francophile. Video resources round out our study of the work by providing examples of different onstage performances.

Students in this course should be at least Advanced Intermediate, comfortable with reading out loud (but not perfectly!) for fun and practice, and also discussing the language and themes portrayed. Participants are encouraged to read sections prior to class (with support if needed) and access the Internet for reference. Students are also asked to purchase their own copy of the most recent Larousse edition to facilitate classwork and access to ancillaries.

Language Requirement: Advanced Level Classes
Dates: Thursday 8/2 – 9/6 @ 3:30-5 PM
Professor: Marc Juneau
Total Fee for session: $140 ($126 for AFLCR Members)

the recent Édition Larousse, but there is also a free annotated edition.
