“Fire of Love” (2022)

Fire of Love poster

This documentary tells the story of two French scientists, Maurice and Katia Krafft, a married couple, who devoted their lives to the study of volcanoes. They captured on film and video some of the most dazzling images of volcanic eruptions ever and in the process founded modern vulcanology. Tragically, they both died in an eruption in 1991.

Some of the images they captured, wrote A. O. Scott in The New York Times, “are terrifying, as molten rock shoots skyward and clouds of ash roll down the sides of mountains. Others are eerie, capturing the glow of an active crater or the otherworldly contours of newly formed rock. The sheer existence of these photos is mind-boggling when you think about how close the people with the cameras must have been to the lava and the smoke.”

Directed by Sara Dosa. In French.
