CANCELLATION POLICY:  Under-subscribed classes will be cancelled at the discretion of the AFLCR;  this is the only case in which refunds can be made. Usually 5 is the minimum enrollment to run a class.

Book Club for Beginners

What is the symbol of the rose in the tale of Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête)? Let’s read this story together in French! This class uses an innovative learning approach for beginner French students who have a strong basic French foundation. We will work on comprehension, pronunciation and oral communication skills through reading and discussing an abbreviated (and adapted in length and in its language) version of Beauty and the Beast (by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont). Vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will unfold in a natural intuitive immersion process while also leaving space for exploring specific language challenges. Students will be encouraged to read out loud, play part of the dialogues, discuss and write about the short story, becoming more comfortable with all facets of communicating in French.

Magazine Club – Mercredi Culturel

Explore France and francophone culture through reading magazine articles, as we provide you articles that guide you to discover new aspects of francophone culture — on topics such as tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema and arts. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language through idiomatic expressions and specific key words and expressions, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented in the article.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements! This French conversation class is completely in French.

Creative Writing – Session Canceled

Let’s play and create with words! Join Alysse to improve your writing skills in French while letting loose your imagination on the page. This course is perfect for those looking to apply their knowledge of French in a more creative and playful way. While continuing to learn and build both vocabulary and grammar, students will also be practicing their oral expression through reading their creations to the group. This course will not only help students improve their written French but their overall understanding of the language’s expression.

Note: This 8-week session is highly interactive and will be held in French, with some English.

Practice your French during your lunch break! Conversation topics will cover familiar topics, current and cultural events, or talk about a movie students have watched between encounters. No textbook required and no homework (or maybe watch a movie!)

A2 102

Bienvenue to level 2 of Latitudes! The first two Unités of Latitudes 2 revisit the past tenses introduced to date, and cover other essential structures such as the forming of questions, and the basic subjunctive. Students will also pick up expressions of certainty, doubt, approval and indifference, as well as be able to ask for and express point of view, and the intention to do something. Authentic tasks, listening activities, phonetics and guided practice to supplement the text are included. The La caricature and Les arts de la rue readings offer students cultural insight into the popularity of and controversy surrounding pop art.

Explorations Culturelles

Based on Ross Steele’s Civilisation Progressive du Français – Intermédiaire, this course offers students an overview not only of what makes France’s culture so unique, but also surveys the cultures of a number of important francophone regions and countries. Short readings followed by engaging exercises and class discussion will portray a depth of cultural practices, products and perspectives. Vocabulary study will be based on the readings chosen, and students help determine which grammar to focus on. The suggested edition must be procured well in advance by students and covers every dimension of French society, from history and contemporary thought, to geography, politics and economics.

Fun with Grammar – Class is Full!

This course uses the Amsco French Three Years (1st or 2nd Edition) review text/workbook to revisit and systematically practice the essential structures people must master to be good speakers. Each chapter gives extensive explanations and models followed by numerous engaging exercises to help students internalize the grammar. Half are completed independently, and the remaining’s exercises are answered conversationally in class. Supplementary online exercises are provided for those elements students wish to spend more time on, and emphasis is always placed on practical usage and unavoidable exceptions.

S.O.S. Racisme – Session Canceled

This class examines how the French are grappling with their own society’s history of racism. Based in part on the short book Le racism expliqué à ma fille, we will read and discuss other texts and articles which expose how the Fifth Republic continues to struggle with prejudice and systematic racism. Starting with the Dreyfus Affair and ending with the most recent protests of 2020, we will uncover how artists, intellectuals and citizens in general seek to change the hearts and minds of those who don’t know their own country’s history or refuse to admit their own biases.

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
