Colchester 11-Week Sessions

Level A1 101 – True Beginner Class

Are you ready to jump-start your French? If you are a true French beginner or someone who wants to resume your studies of French after a long period, this class is for you.  This is an introduction to the foundations of French where you will learn basic useful words and expressions used in daily situations.

Level A1 102

Want to express your preferences with your classmates and learn how to talk about projects you have in the near future?  This class will also introduce a bundle of irregular verbs (and commonly used in every day language).

Level A2 104

This class covers Unités 6 & 7 in the Latitudes textbook series. Students will finish learning how to convey and understand expressions of emotion and propositions. Essential structures include an overview of the uses of the subjunctive, and a major pronoun tour: y, en, and those associated with questions and demonstration (lequel, celui-ci etc.)

Burlington 11-Week Sessions

Level A1 103

Find out how to express situations that happened in the past, ask a variety of questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer, and discover ways to respond to invites. We will also learn to describe the weather and how to make appointments indicating time and dates.

Level A1 104

This class will get you ready to ask for and follow directions, as well as locate hot spots when traveling in Francophone regions. This class will also guide you on advising others.

Level A1 105

This class is designed to increase students’ mastery of expressions and structures needed to talk about different types of places, reflexive actions and expressing intensity and quantity. Real world sources and listening activities place participants in authentic situations to help enhance learning and motivation.

Level A2 105

This course concludes the A2 level in Latitudes, covering Units 8 & 9 in the series. Cultural and discussion topics will revolve around “Les jeux d’argent,” (Games for money) and “Communication et médias.” An emphasis is placed on organizing discourse, telephone conversations and other problematic social exchanges like the giving of and answering to criticism. Grammatically, we’ll revisit the pronouns y and en, expressions involving the world of work, adverb formation and the subtleties of qui and que. Students are encouraged to speak more in small groups as special emphasis is placed henceforth on conversation and the asking and answering of questions for socializing.

Café Conversation Club in French – For Beginners

You have taken French in the past or you just started with French learning this past spring, and you wish you could put it more into practice. This Café Club is an excellent way to grow your confidence and take a leap with your conversation skills!

This new Café Conversation Club offers simple conversation practice and discussions of familiar topics in a supportive and friendly learning environment, with prompts and conversation models to follow.

Book Club

With the book “Je t’aime, Paris” and other visual media, you will travel to the City of Love. This course will introduce you to the world of art, fashion, architecture, cinema, gastronomy, nature, sports, and more in France’s beloved capital.

In addition to learning more about Paris, you also will expand your vocabulary, enhance your grammar and develop your listening and pronunciation skills, as we read and listen about Paris’s most famous landmarks and hidden attractions. Students will be encouraged to read out loud, discuss, write and/or present about a place in Paris, becoming more comfortable with all facets of communicating in French. Activities at the end check comprehension.

An enclosed audio CD provides a recording of a native speaker reading the book.

Magazine Club – Mardi Culturel

Explore France and francophone culture through reading magazine articles, as we propose you articles that will guide you to discover a new aspect of the francophone culture — on topics like tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema and arts. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language through idiomatic expressions and specific key words and expressions, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented in the article.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements!

Ciné-Club

Le film d’art – Always at the forefront of movie-making and exploring universal themes, French and French-speaking directors and producers always offer students new insights into societal issues and artistic expression. After considering Agnes Varda’s Visages Villages (Faces Places), participants will help choose titles that reflect their own particular interests on the theme of art film. All genres of film will be drawn from to give an overview of what the French consider the “eighth art.”

Netflix or Amazon streaming required. Level A2 101 or greater encouraged for class discussion, but not necessary as all films are subtitled.

Book Discussion: Vol de Nuit

Read and discuss Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous second novel set in Argentina, based on the author’s early piloting for Aéropostale flying over the most exotic and remote regions in his experience to date. Advanced Conversation

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
