Level A1 101: True Beginner Class

Are you ready to jump-start your French? If you are a true French beginner or someone who wants to resume your studies of French after a long period, this class is for you.  This is an introduction to the foundations of French where you will learn basic useful words and expressions used in daily situations.

Level A1 102: Formerly Beginner B

Want to express your preferences with your classmates and learn how to talk about projects you have in the near future?  This class will also introduce a bundle of irregular verbs (and commonly used in every day language).

Level A1 103: Formerly Intermediate A

Find out how to express situations that happened in the past, ask a variety of questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer, and discover ways to respond to invites. We will also learn to describe the weather and how to make appointments indicating time and dates.

Level A2 103       CLASS IS FULL

This class covers Units 3 and 4 of Latitudes 2, and places emphasis on making justifications for one’s actions, expressing intent and possible restrictions, as well as preferences and comparisons. Some new forms of negation are covered, as are double pronouns, the superlative and agreement in the passé composé. Culturally, we’ll explore the French presence outside of France and how people in general choose to spend their vacations. Some elements from A2 102 will also be reviewed as we conclude Module 1 with the text’s suggested self-assessments.

Let’s Read Short Stories Together

Let’s read Charles Perrault’s tales together in French!  This class uses an innovative learning approach for students who have a strong basic French foundation. We will work on comprehension and communication skills through reading and discussing a short tales. Vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will unfold in a natural intuitive immersion process while also leaving space for exploring specific language challenges. Students will be encouraged to discuss, debate and, at the end of the session, write a tale of their own, becoming more comfortable with all the facets of communicating in French.

A Look at French Culture through Language and Lifestyle

This class focuses on French culture through the lens of language (idioms and expressions) and francophone advertisements (TV commercials or printed ads). Students will discover new expressions that are commonly used in daily conversations, and practice them in context. In the second part of each class, we will look at advertisements, their message and how they fit into the culture.

Magazine Club – Mardi Culturel

Explore France and francophone culture through reading magazine articles, as we propose you articles that will guide you to discover a new aspect of the francophone culture — on topics like tourism, gastronomy, lifestyle, cinema and arts. Each encounter will allow time to observe and discuss the intricacies of the language through idiomatic expressions and specific key words and expressions, while also discussing the cultural aspects presented in the article.

An interesting way to improve your language skills as well as discovering cultural elements!

A1 103 Condensé

A six-week review and practice of the material contained in this important module. While many students wish to move on through the text, others request additional exposure to difficult concepts like the passé composé and object pronouns. Every effort is made to revisit these notions in an authentic and practical conversational setting. Other target objectives include asking important questions, expressing one’s point of view and using expressions of quantity and cost to shop for essentials.

Phonétique

This new six-week class focuses on those pronunciation elements in French which are typical problems for English speakers, but also the most fun to master. Emphasis is placed on consonant and vowel-to-vowel linking, syllabic rhythm and those specific vowel and consonant sounds that prove difficult to so many. Silent final consonants, the mute “e,” and nasal vowels are also featured in this overview. The numerous engaging book exercises and Internet resources provided are meant to give the beginner or intermediate student the confidence they seek when conversing in French or reading aloud.

Cinéma Club

Cinéma Club returns this Fall to propose “Les Incontournables,” those films which placed France at the forefront of movie-making last century and continue to influence modern directors everywhere. From before Truffaut and the French New Wave through to Luc Besson and more recent directors, this class aims to overview over 75 years of “classics” which have broadened the artistic appeal of the “septième art” to audiences the world over. Students are provided with the basic lexicons needed to discuss film techniques, genres and themes and are encouraged to express their ideas and opinions during class discussions. Movies are watched outside of class time and require access to Amazon, Netflix or another source for movie rental.

Book Club: Cyrano de Bergerac

One of France’s most intriguing personalities was brilliantly captured in this biographical play by Edmond Rostand in 1897. Students will get to read aloud and analyze the text which is as renowned as much for the beauty of its poetry as for the story of unrequited love in a turbulent age. We will also explore the historical context and appreciate the lasting influence of the themes which continue to entertain and fascinate to this day. References to the Depardieu film and Steve Martin’s Roxanne will also be included.

Level A2 102

Bienvenue to level 2 of Latitudes! The first two Unités of Latitudes 2 revisit the past tenses introduced to date, and cover other essential structures such as the forming of questions, and the basic subjunctive. Students will also pick up expressions of certainty, doubt, approval and indifference, as well as be able to ask for and express point of view, and the intention to do something. Authentic tasks, listening activities, phonetics and guided practice to supplement the text are included. The La caricature and Les arts de la rue readings offer students cultural insight into the popularity of and controversy surrounding pop art.

Are you planning a day in Montreal soon, or a weekend in Quebec City? Would you like to converse more fluently on your next trip to Paris, the South of France or any other francophone country? Come join this conversational thematic French class and you will learn to reserve a hotel room, order meals in a restaurant, ask and understand directions, make inquiries about museums, theaters, shopping and other sites.
