Burlington 6-Week Sessions

Level A1 101 Concentré

Great for true beginners or students wanting to practice more with the basic structures and vocabulary needed to get started speaking French. Based on the first two Units of Latitudes 1, students learn the fundamentals of gender, conjugating verbs and beginning to talk about likes and dislikes. Some class time is also devoted to correct pronunciation, important cultural distinctions, and the specific skills and resources needed for success moving forward.

Ciné-Club

This six-week class will require students watch a total of five different films using Amazon Prime to stream. The first class orients cinéphiles with the expressions they will need to discuss themes, acting and film techniques. Students are also encouraged to share their opinions and make connections to and recommendations for movies they have already seen. This session we will focus on unique films from Quebec, France and Africa. Students will be able to choose from a variety of options and genres according to their preferences. Level A1 105 recommended.

Greatest Hits of La Chanson Française

Discover “les plus grands tubes” of French popular music with this 6-week course. Featured musicians include Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker, et Leo Ferre, through the hey day of the 60’s with Gainsbourg, Johnny et Barbara. From Bécot to Brel and Brassens – students will listen to the greatest artists and melodies from 50 years of recording history and discuss the lyrics which helped them become timeless classics.

La rue Cases-Nègres

This short and easy to read novel by Joseph Zobel tells the story of a young black boy coming of age in 1920s Martinique. Raised by his grandmother toward the end of the French colonial era there, it recounts his advancement through the French school system as he grapples with leaving his home to make a better life for himself. Moving and insightful, students will read, discuss and consider the text together and also have occasion to view in part the film version “Black Shack Alley” rendered from it. A2 103 Conversational

A review of the material covered in Units 4 & 5 in Latitudes 2 with the goal of allowing more time in class to speak and converse. Students will reconsider some of the most important structures like the subjunctive and agreement with avoir in the passé composé, while also concentrating on the fundamental expressions required to talk about comparisons, events past and emotions. Students will also focus on the writing of informal letters and the scripting of dialogues using the target structures to help them feel more confident in their speaking abilities.

A2 104 Conversational

Parlons en français! Loosely based on Units 5 & 6 of Latitudes 2, this class will allow students more time to talk about a variety of topics which interest them. Using supplemental exercises and short readings, participants can practice what is most difficult to master in a structured manner and also react less formally to the themes and characters found in excerpts and stories. Students are also encouraged to propose their own areas of interest to stimulate learning and take advantage of our wonderful class chemistry.

French for Travelers

Are you interested in taking advantage of travel in lovely Quebec, Paris or other Francophone destinations, but don’t want a complete French class? We will cover basic phrases for navigating and ordering from a menu, asking directions, telling time, as well as common courtesies that will bring you smiles. We will also touch upon some cultural do’s and don’ts that will keep you on everyone’s good side so you fully enjoy your trip, and even find some fun offbeat adventures.

A1 102 Intensive

If you have taken beginner classes and have a good feel for some basics, this class will encourage you to put them to use. Communication will be highly encouraged, to use what you have, and we will embark on forming more complex sentences and adding vocabulary. In 6 weeks you should be able to get ready for the next level.

Advanced Conversation

Designed for High-Intermediate and Advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities are based on authentic materials borrowed from current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students.
