AFLCR French Classes for Adults

The AFLCR French instruction program emphasizes oral expression within the necessary boundaries of grammar, along with listening, reading and writing skills. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are native and near-native French speakers.

Spring and Fall term classes meet from 6:30-8:00 in the evening. Tuition for an 11-week course is $225.00, due with registration form. This fee is non-refundable. Current members of the AFLCR are eligible for a 10% discount. For the first four levels, a textbook is provided for use during the session; if you wish to keep it, the cost is $20. Other classes may require a text to be purchased if the instructor so chooses.

All classes are held in the Dupont Building, 123 Ethan Allen Avenue, on the north campus of Saint Michael’s College (Fort Ethan Allen). Click here for directions and a map.

Classes may be cancelled if insufficiently subscribed; in general, 6 students is the minimum to run any course.

Beginning French A

 

This introduction to French covers topics including greetings, telling time, the weather, numbers, dates and seasons, expressing possession, and likes and dislikes.  Basic grammar instruction includes the verbs to be, to have, and verbs ending in -er as well as adjective agreement and definite and indefinite articles.

Beginning French B  

This course touches on topics such as family life and home-related terms, clothing and colors, and talking about the past.  Grammar topics include the verbs to come and to go, regular -ir and -re verbs, and verbs for describing everyday activities, an introduction to past tenses, and question words.

Intermediate French A  

Learn vocabulary and forms for talking about food and drink, learning, politics, city life, media, and law enforcement as well as terms for expressing quantity.  Grammar topics include the verb to do and other common regular and irregular verbs, and more about expressing the past as well as direct and indirect object pronouns.

French For Travelers:

Learn to navigate cities, order delicious food, find the cultural hotspots, and not feel lost when you go to Montreal, Quebec City, or any of the 35 countries where French is spoken. The final class period is a daytrip to Montreal (to be scheduled), an opportunity to put your language skills to the test!  Open to all levels.  $15 fee for textbook and CD is required.
